What is pte?

The Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic is a leading computer-based English language proficiency exam widely recognized across Australia for university admissions, professional registrations, and visa applications. It is accepted by 100% of Australian universities and the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) for all visa categories, including Student (Subclass 500) and Skilled Migration. The test evaluates four key skills—Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening—using an automated AI scoring system that ensures objective results, typically delivered within 48 hours.

For the 2026 intake, while the minimum score for a student visa is generally around 42–47, most competitive undergraduate programs require a score of 58+, and postgraduate courses often demand 65+. For those seeking Permanent Residency (PR), achieving a “Superior” score of 79+ is highly coveted, as it contributes a maximum of 20 points toward the skilled migration points test.

As of August 7, 2025, the Australian government no longer accepts “at-home” or online versions of the test (PTE Academic Online). You must take the exam at a secure, physical testing center for it to be valid for visa purposes.
